Daman Travel Guide

Quiet beaches and Portuguese forts on the Gujarat coast

Overview

About Daman

Daman is a small coastal town on the Gulf of Khambhat, tucked between Gujarat and Maharashtra and part of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. For more than four centuries it was a Portuguese possession, and that past is still visible in its sturdy forts, whitewashed churches and narrow lanes of old houses.

The Daman Ganga river splits the town into two halves. Moti Daman, on the southern bank, is the quieter administrative and heritage quarter, enclosed within massive fort walls. Nani Daman, to the north, is the commercial side, with markets, restaurants and the smaller St Jerome Fort. A bridge across the river connects the two.

Daman is a popular short break from Mumbai, Surat and Vadodara, largely for its relaxed beaches and seafood. Its beaches are wide and grey-sanded rather than tropical, and the sea is often murky, so think of Daman as a place for sunset walks, heritage strolls and long, unhurried meals rather than swimming.

Getting there

How to Reach Daman

  • By Air

Daman's own airstrip has very limited civilian service, so most travellers fly into Surat International Airport, about 120 km away, or Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, about 190 km away. Taxis are available from both.

  • By Rail

Vapi, about 12 km from Daman, is the nearest railway station and lies on the busy Mumbai–Ahmedabad main line, so many express trains stop there. Shared autos, local buses and taxis run from Vapi to Daman.

  • By Road

Daman is about 190 km from Mumbai and about 120 km from Surat, reached via the Mumbai–Ahmedabad highway and a turn-off at Vapi. Private buses and cabs run regularly from Mumbai and Gujarat cities, and a scooter or auto is enough for getting around town.

Taste of the city

Famous Food of Daman

  • Fried pomfret

Fresh pomfret marinated in spices and shallow-fried, a staple of Daman's seafood restaurants.

  • Prawn and crab curries

Coconut and chilli-based curries prepared with the day's catch.

  • Portuguese-influenced dishes

Some local homes and eateries still cook vinegar-spiced meat and fish dishes that reflect the town's colonial history.

  • Gujarati thali

A vegetarian platter of dal, kadhi, vegetables, rotis and sweets, widely available in Nani Daman.

Travel Tips for Daman

  • Do not expect clear blue water; Daman's beaches are best for walks and sunsets rather than swimming.
  • Carry ID, as checks are common at the border between Gujarat and Daman.
  • Visit the forts and churches early in the day to avoid the midday heat.
  • Weekends are crowded with visitors from nearby cities, so plan a weekday trip for quieter beaches.
