Overview
About Saputara
Saputara is the best-known hill station of Gujarat, set on a plateau of the Sahyadri range in the forested Dang district, close to the Maharashtra border. At an altitude of roughly 1,000 metres it is modest by Himalayan standards, but its cool breezes, green slopes and sweeping valley views make it a welcome escape from the heat of the Gujarat plains and a popular weekend trip from Surat, Nashik and Mumbai.
The name is often explained as the abode of serpents, and snake imagery appears in local worship along the Sarpaganga river. The Dang region is home to tribal communities such as the Bhil, Kunbi and Warli, and their traditions, art and festivals give the area a character quite different from the rest of the state. The small tribal museum and the artists' village in Saputara offer a glimpse of this culture.
Saputara itself is compact, planned around a central lake, with gardens, viewpoints and a ropeway arranged within a short drive of one another. The town is at its most beautiful during the monsoon, when clouds roll across the plateau, waterfalls appear on every hillside and the annual monsoon festival brings events and crowds. Beyond town, Gira Falls, forest reserves and Maharashtra's forts are within easy reach.
