Overview
About Ujjain
Ujjain, on the banks of the sacred Shipra river in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, is one of the seven holy cities of Hinduism. Known in ancient times as Avantika, it was a great centre of learning, trade and astronomy, and features in the stories of King Vikramaditya and the poet Kalidasa.
The city's spiritual heart is the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, where the pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti draws devotees from across the country. The temple is now approached through the Shri Mahakal Lok, a broad corridor of sculptures and murals that retells stories of Shiva. Around it are dozens of other shrines, from the Harsiddhi temple to the unusual Kal Bhairav temple.
Ujjain is also one of the four places where the Kumbh Mela is held, here known as the Simhastha, which takes place roughly every twelve years on the Shipra ghats. Between festivals the city keeps a calm, traditional pace, and it pairs easily with Indore nearby and with the Jyotirlinga at Omkareshwar further south.
