Overview

About Agra

Agra sits on a bend of the Yamuna river in western Uttar Pradesh and is, for many travellers, the reason to visit India in the first place. The Taj Mahal, built by Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, needs no introduction, yet seeing its white marble change colour from dawn pink to midday white to evening gold still surprises first-time visitors. It is one of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in and around the city, alongside Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

For much of the 16th and 17th centuries Agra was a capital of the Mughal empire, and the city still carries that imperial imprint. Red sandstone forts, garden tombs laid out in the charbagh pattern, inlaid marble and old bazaars around the Jama Masjid all date to this period. Beyond the headline monuments are quieter gems such as Itimad-ud-Daulah, often called the Baby Taj, and the riverside Mehtab Bagh garden.

Agra is an easy trip from Delhi and forms one corner of the popular Golden Triangle with Delhi and Jaipur. Many visitors come for a single day, but staying a night lets you see the Taj at sunrise, when the light is softest and the crowds are thinnest, and leaves time for Fatehpur Sikri or the temple towns of Mathura and Vrindavan.

A vast red sandstone fort that served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors. Inside are palaces, audience halls and the Musamman Burj, from where Shah Jahan is said to have gazed at the Taj in his final years.

  • Itimad-ud-Daulah

A small, exquisite tomb on the east bank of the Yamuna, covered in delicate stone inlay. It is often described as a forerunner of the Taj Mahal.

  • Akbar's Tomb, Sikandra

The grand tomb of Emperor Akbar on the city's northern edge, with a striking gateway and large lawns where deer and langurs roam.

Gardens & Viewpoints

  • Mehtab Bagh

A Mughal garden directly across the river from the Taj Mahal, and one of the best places to watch the monument at sunset without the crowds.

  • Chini Ka Rauza

A lesser-visited riverside tomb known for its traces of glazed Persian-style tilework, a style rarely seen elsewhere in Agra.

Markets

  • Jama Masjid and Kinari Bazaar

The old city mosque commissioned by Shah Jahan's daughter Jahanara, surrounded by crowded lanes selling wedding finery, spices, sweets and silverware.

Nearby Excursions

  • Fatehpur Sikri

Akbar's abandoned capital, about 40 km from Agra, with the towering Buland Darwaza, the Jama Masjid and the marble tomb of Sufi saint Salim Chishti.

  • Mathura and Vrindavan

The towns linked to the birth and childhood of Lord Krishna lie about 55 to 70 km away and are full of temples, ghats and festive energy around Holi and Janmashtami.

Top Things to Do in Agra

  1. 1

    See the Taj at sunrise

Arrive at the gates before the monument opens to watch the marble glow in the early light and take photographs before the midday crowds build up.

  2. 2

    Watch artisans at work

Visit a marble inlay workshop to see how craftsmen cut and set semi-precious stones into marble, the same pietra dura technique used on the Taj.

  3. 3

Explore the old city on foot

Walk the lanes around Kinari Bazaar and Johri Bazaar for street food, sweet shops and a glimpse of everyday life away from the monuments.

  4. 4

    Take a heritage walk

Guided walks in the old quarters and along the river cover the lesser-known Mughal tombs, havelis and gardens that most visitors miss.

  5. 5
