Industrial city on the Ganga with 1857 history and Bithoor ghats

Overview

About Kanpur

Kanpur, on the southern bank of the Ganga, is one of the largest cities in Uttar Pradesh and has long been one of North India's major industrial centres. Under British rule it grew into a busy cantonment and manufacturing town, famous for its textile mills and leather industry, and it is still sometimes described as the Manchester of the East.

The city played a dramatic part in the uprising of 1857, and several places connected with those events survive, including Satti Chaura Ghat, Nana Rao Park and the Kanpur Memorial Church. A short drive upstream, the riverside town of Bithoor is linked with Nana Saheb Peshwa, Rani Lakshmibai's childhood and, according to tradition, the ashram of the sage Valmiki.

Kanpur is not a classic sightseeing destination, but it offers a mix of temples, colonial buildings, green spaces and a lively food scene that make a short stay worthwhile. It is also well connected by rail and road, and Lucknow is close enough to combine with a trip here.
