Overview
About Bharatpur
Bharatpur, in eastern Rajasthan close to the Uttar Pradesh border, is best known for Keoladeo National Park, one of the finest bird habitats in Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once a royal duck-hunting reserve of the Maharajas of Bharatpur, the shallow wetlands are now protected, and every winter they fill with migratory ducks, geese, waders and raptors arriving from Central Asia and beyond, joining hundreds of resident species.
The town has a proud martial history as the seat of the Jat kingdom founded in the 18th century. Its Lohagarh, or Iron Fort, earned its name by withstanding repeated sieges, including a long one by British forces. Nearby Deeg, the summer retreat of the Jat rulers, is known for its palaces set among gardens, tanks and hundreds of fountains.
Bharatpur sits in the Braj region, so the Krishna pilgrimage towns of Mathura, Vrindavan and Govardhan are within easy reach, and Agra and Fatehpur Sikri are close by. Many travellers combine a couple of mornings of birdwatching with these heritage sites on a Golden Triangle itinerary.
