Overview
About Udaipur
Udaipur, the old capital of the Mewar kingdom in southern Rajasthan, is often called the City of Lakes. Founded by Maharana Udai Singh II in the 16th century, it grew around a series of man-made lakes set against the green Aravalli hills, and its white palaces, temples and havelis reflected in still water have made it one of the most romantic cities in India.
The heart of the city is the old quarter on the eastern bank of Lake Pichola, where the vast City Palace complex rises above the ghats and narrow lanes wind past the Jagdish Temple, art shops and rooftop cafes. Across the water sit the island palaces of Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas, and sunset boat rides here are a Udaipur ritual.
Udaipur is also a gateway to the wider Mewar region. Within easy reach are the mighty walls of Kumbhalgarh, the marble Jain temples of Ranakpur, the fort of Chittorgarh and the temple towns of Eklingji and Nathdwara. Its mild winters and relatively green setting make it a gentler introduction to Rajasthan than the desert cities further west.
