Tea gardens, the toy train and sunrise over Kanchenjunga

Overview

About Darjeeling

Darjeeling is a hill town in northern West Bengal, perched on a ridge in the eastern Himalaya with Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, rising across the horizon. Its name has become shorthand for some of the finest tea in the world, and the slopes below town are draped in neatly clipped tea bushes that roll down into deep valleys.

The British developed Darjeeling as a sanatorium and summer retreat in the 19th century, and much of the colonial town survives: the Mall and Chowrasta square, old schools and churches, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the narrow-gauge "toy train" that is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing. Alongside this heritage is a strong Gorkha, Tibetan and Lepcha culture, visible in the town's monasteries, markets and food.

A typical visit combines a pre-dawn trip to Tiger Hill for sunrise on the snow peaks, a ride on the toy train, a tea garden tour and walks around the Mall. The town is steep and can be crowded in peak season, but early mornings, when the mist lifts and the mountains appear, are unforgettable.
