Overview
About Siliguri
Siliguri, in the north of West Bengal, is the great junction of the eastern Himalayan foothills. Squeezed into the narrow strip of land often called the Chicken's Neck, it connects the rest of India with Sikkim, the Darjeeling hills, the Dooars, Bhutan and Nepal, and nearly every traveller heading to these places passes through.
Many people see the city only as a transit stop, but it has enough to fill a relaxed day or two. There are Buddhist monasteries and large temples, a forest sanctuary right on the edge of town, busy markets full of goods from across the border, and a lively food scene that mixes Bengali, Nepali, Tibetan and Marwari influences.
Siliguri is above all a convenient base. From here roads climb to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Mirik and Gangtok, and head east into the tea gardens and wildlife parks of the Dooars. The famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage toy train, also begins its journey into the hills from New Jalpaiguri station.
