Overview
About Patnitop
Patnitop is a small hill resort on a forested plateau in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, at an altitude of roughly 2,000 metres. Dense deodar and pine forests open up into grassy meadows, and on clear days the views stretch across ridge after ridge of the Pir Panjal and the Chenab valley. It is far less developed than the big Himalayan hill stations, which is a large part of its appeal.
For a long time Patnitop sat directly on the old Jammu–Srinagar highway, and travellers often stopped here to break the journey. A long road tunnel now bypasses the plateau, so through traffic no longer passes the resort, and visitors reach it on the old road via Kud. The result is a quieter destination that is still within a few hours' drive of Jammu.
Patnitop changes character with the seasons. Summer brings families from the plains for walks, picnics and pony rides on the meadows, while winter covers the slopes in snow and turns the area into a simple snow destination for sledging and beginner skiing. Nearby Nathatop and Sanasar add paragliding, open grasslands and even more space to roam.
