Overview
About Coimbatore
Coimbatore, often called Kovai, is the second-largest city in Tamil Nadu and the commercial hub of the western Kongu region. Its textile mills earned it the nickname "Manchester of South India", and it remains a busy centre for cotton, engineering and education. For travellers, though, its biggest asset is location: the city sits at the foot of the Western Ghats, close to the Nilgiris and the Anamalai hills.
Thanks to the Palakkad Gap, a natural break in the Ghats, Coimbatore enjoys a breezy and relatively mild climate compared with the plains of Tamil Nadu. Temples crown the surrounding hills, rivers like the Noyyal and Siruvani flow down from the forest, and the giant Adiyogi bust at the Isha Yoga Centre has become one of the most visited sights in the state.
Many visitors pass through on their way to Ooty, Coonoor or Valparai, but it is worth spending a day or two here. The city offers hearty Kongunadu cooking, good shopping for cotton textiles, peaceful temples and easy drives to waterfalls and wildlife reserves.
