Rameshwaram Travel Guide

Island pilgrimage town of the Ramanathaswamy Temple

Overview

About Rameshwaram

Rameshwaram is a small pilgrimage town on Pamban Island, off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, separated from the mainland by a narrow strait. It is one of the four Char Dham sites and home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which makes it one of the most important destinations for Hindu pilgrims anywhere in India. The town is flat, sandy and surrounded by turquoise sea.

According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama worshipped Shiva here before crossing to Lanka, and much of Rameshwaram's landscape is woven into that story, from the sacred tanks and wells to the shoals stretching towards Sri Lanka. The great Ramanathaswamy Temple, with its famous pillared corridors, stands at the heart of the town, and most visits begin with a ritual bath in the sea at Agnitheertham.

Beyond the temple, Rameshwaram offers dramatic coastal scenery. The road to Dhanushkodi runs along a narrow strip of sand between two seas to the ruins of a town destroyed by a cyclone in 1964, and the journey across the Pamban channel is a highlight in itself. The town is also the birthplace of former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, whose memorial and family home draw many visitors.
