Overview
About Kanyakumari
Kanyakumari sits at the very southern tip of mainland India, where the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean meet. Standing on its shore and watching the waves of three seas roll in is a moment many Indians hope to experience at least once, and the town draws pilgrims, families and travellers throughout the year.
The town takes its name from Devi Kanya Kumari, the virgin goddess who is worshipped at the ancient temple on the shore. Just offshore, two rocky islets carry the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, built where Swami Vivekananda is said to have meditated, and the towering Thiruvalluvar Statue honouring the Tamil poet-saint. Ferries take visitors across to both.
Kanyakumari is especially famous for its sunrises and sunsets over the sea, and on some evenings around the full moon visitors gather to watch the sun set and the moon rise. The surrounding district, with its coconut groves, paddy fields and the edge of the Western Ghats, adds historic palaces, temples, waterfalls and quiet beaches within easy reach.
