Overview
About Jalandhar
Jalandhar is one of the oldest cities in Punjab and the main town of the fertile Doaba region, the land between the Beas and Sutlej rivers. It is a busy, prosperous place rather than a classic tourist destination, but it rewards visitors with important temples and gurdwaras, a lively food culture and an easy pace that makes it a pleasant stop on a Punjab road trip.
The city is known across India for its sports goods industry, which produces cricket bats, hockey sticks, balls and other equipment, and for its long tradition of Hindustani classical music. The Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan, one of the oldest classical music festivals in the country, has been held at the Devi Talab Mandir grounds for generations.
Jalandhar is also a convenient base for exploring central Punjab. The princely town of Kapurthala with its French-inspired palace is close by, Amritsar and the Golden Temple are an easy drive away, and the historic town of Kartarpur within the district has deep links with Sikh history.
