Lavasa Travel Guide

Lakeside hill town in the Sahyadris near Pune

Overview

About Lavasa

Lavasa is a planned hill town built around the Warasgaon reservoir in the Sahyadri hills, about 60 km west of Pune. Unlike the older British-era hill stations of Maharashtra, it was laid out from scratch, so its pastel-coloured buildings, waterfront promenade and neat roads give it a look that feels closer to a Mediterranean resort than a ghat village.

The real draw for most visitors, however, is the landscape around it. The drive in climbs through the Mutha valley, past reservoirs and folds of green hills that turn almost unreal in the monsoon, when streams spill across the slopes and mist settles over the lake. In the dry months the same hills turn golden and the air is clear enough for long views across the water.

Development of the town has been uneven over the years, so some shops, cafes and facilities may be closed or limited when you visit. It works best as a relaxed overnight or day trip from Pune or Mumbai: a walk along the lake, a slow lunch, and a loop through the dams and ghat roads of the surrounding Mulshi region.
