Overview
About Matheran
Matheran is a tiny hill station on a forested ridge of the Sahyadris, close to Mumbai and Pune, and its greatest charm is what it lacks: motor vehicles. Cars and buses stop at the edge of town, and from there you walk, ride a horse or take a hand-pulled rickshaw along red laterite paths shaded by tall trees. The silence, broken only by birdsong and the clip of hooves, feels remarkable so close to two of India's busiest cities.
The name roughly means 'forest on the head', and the summit is indeed covered in dense woodland. Around its edges, more than two dozen viewpoints look out over deep valleys, the plains of the Konkan and, on clear days, the distant sea. Colonial-era bungalows, a small market and a quiet lake complete the picture of an old-fashioned retreat.
Getting there is part of the fun. The narrow-gauge Matheran Hill Railway, popularly called the toy train, winds up from Neral through forest and tight curves. In the monsoon the ridge vanishes into cloud, waterfalls appear on every cliff and the paths turn muddy, while the dry months bring clear views and gentle weather for walking.
