Mahabaleshwar Travel Guide

Strawberry fields, viewpoints and Venna Lake

Overview

About Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar is the highest hill station in Maharashtra, set on a broad plateau in the Sahyadri range at well over 1,300 metres. It was developed as a summer retreat during the colonial era, and it still has the feel of an old-fashioned holiday town, with forested roads leading to dozens of viewpoints, a busy market and families boating on Venna Lake.

The plateau is also sacred ground. Old Mahabaleshwar is home to ancient temples, and the area is regarded as the source of five rivers, including the Krishna, which is celebrated at the Panchganga temple. All around, cliffs drop sharply into the valleys of the Koyna and Savitri rivers, giving the viewpoints their dramatic sweep.

Today Mahabaleshwar is best known for strawberries, which are grown on farms across the region and sold fresh, as jams, crushes and with cream. The neighbouring town of Panchgani, with its table-top plateau, and the Maratha fort of Pratapgad are easy additions. The heavy monsoon closes much of the hill station for a few months, so most visitors come between October and May.
