Overview

About Bengaluru

Bengaluru, still widely called Bangalore, is the capital of Karnataka and one of India's most dynamic cities. Sitting on the Deccan plateau at around 900 metres above sea level, it enjoys a mild climate for most of the year, which once made it a favoured retreat and earned it the title of the Garden City. Today it is better known as the country's technology hub, yet its leafy parks, old neighbourhoods and lively food culture remain very much intact.

The city's story goes back to Kempegowda, the chieftain who laid out a mud fort and market here in the 16th century. Later came Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, whose summer palace and fort remains still stand, and then the British, who built a large cantonment with churches, colonial bungalows and wide avenues. Each era left a distinct quarter, from the crowded old pete markets to the boulevards around Cubbon Park.

For visitors, Bengaluru works both as a destination and as a base. A couple of days are enough for its gardens, palace, temples, museums and famous eateries, and from here it is easy to reach Nandi Hills, Mysuru, the Kaveri river country and the coffee estates of Coorg and Chikkamagaluru.
