Coorg Travel Guide

Also known as Kodagu

Misty coffee estates, waterfalls and Kodava culture

Overview

About Coorg

Coorg, officially known as Kodagu, is a hilly district in south-western Karnataka where the Western Ghats fold into misty valleys of coffee, pepper and cardamom. Its rolling estates, shaded by tall rainforest trees, are the backbone of India's coffee industry, and the scent of roasting beans and ripe oranges hangs over the hills for much of the year.

The district is the homeland of the Kodavas, a community with a proud martial tradition, distinctive dress and a cuisine famous for pork curry and rice dumplings. Coorg is also the birthplace of the Kaveri: the river rises at Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri hills, and its source is one of the most sacred sites in Karnataka. Festivals such as Kaveri Sankramana and the harvest festival of Puthari bring out the region's customs.

Madikeri, the district headquarters, is the main town and a handy base, but many visitors prefer to stay on a homestay or estate and spend their days walking among the coffee bushes, chasing waterfalls and trekking up grassy peaks. Coorg is best for slow travel: plan to drive between viewpoints, linger over long meals and enjoy the cool air.
