Overview
About Hyderabad
Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, was founded in the late 16th century by the Qutb Shahi dynasty on the banks of the Musi river, with the Charminar at its centre. The city later became the seat of the Asaf Jahi Nizams, whose wealth and patronage shaped its palaces, gardens, institutions and refined court culture. Today, the old city's minarets and bazaars stand in sharp contrast to the glass towers of its technology hubs.
The historic core, south of the Musi, is where most visitors begin: the Charminar, Mecca Masjid, Laad Bazaar and Chowmahalla Palace are all within walking distance of each other. To the west rises Golconda Fort, the earlier Qutb Shahi stronghold, with the domed Qutb Shahi Tombs nearby. North of the river, Hussain Sagar lake divides Hyderabad from its twin city, Secunderabad.
Hyderabad is also one of the great food cities of India. Its dum biryani, slow-cooked haleem during Ramzan, Irani cafes serving chai with Osmania biscuits and Deccani desserts like double ka meetha draw food lovers from across the country. Add shopping for pearls and bangles, and day trips to Ramoji Film City, and the city easily fills several days.
