Overview
About Chandigarh
Chandigarh is one of India's best-known planned cities, built after Independence as the new capital of Punjab and today a Union Territory serving as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. Its master plan was shaped by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, who laid out the city in self-contained numbered sectors, separated by wide, tree-lined roads and generous green belts.
The result is a city that feels unusually orderly, clean and green, set against the backdrop of the Shivalik foothills. Le Corbusier's Capitol Complex, with the High Court, the Secretariat, the Legislative Assembly and the Open Hand monument, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of his work. Alongside the modernist concrete are some delightfully quirky creations, above all Nek Chand's Rock Garden, built from industrial and urban waste.
For visitors, Chandigarh is easy to enjoy: lakeside walks at Sukhna, landscaped gardens, good museums, lively markets in Sector 17 and Sector 22, and hearty Punjabi food. It is also a convenient gateway to the hills, with Kasauli, Shimla and the Morni Hills a short drive away.
