Dalhousie Travel Guide

Colonial hill station of pine forests and Dhauladhar views

Overview

About Dalhousie

Dalhousie is a quiet hill station in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, spread across five hills on the western edge of the Dhauladhar range. Founded by the British in the mid-19th century and named after Lord Dalhousie, the Governor-General of the time, it still has the feel of an old summer retreat, with stone churches, Victorian cottages and long walking paths shaded by deodar and pine.

Unlike busier Himachal resorts, Dalhousie moves at an unhurried pace. The town centres on two squares, Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, linked by a level promenade that is perfect for evening strolls. On clear days, the snow peaks of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges appear over the ridges, and the valleys of the Ravi river fall away below.

Most visitors combine Dalhousie with Khajjiar, a meadow ringed by forest, and the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, while the historic town of Chamba, with its carved temples and museum, makes an easy excursion. It is a destination for families, couples and anyone who simply wants fresh mountain air and gentle walks rather than a packed itinerary.
