Tirupati Travel Guide

Pilgrim city below the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple

Overview

About Tirupati

Tirupati, in the south of Andhra Pradesh, sits at the foot of the Seshachalam hills and is the gateway to Tirumala, home of the Sri Venkateswara Temple. Devotees believe Lord Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu, resides on these seven hills, and the shrine is among the most visited places of worship anywhere in the world.

The town of Tirupati and the hilltop township of Tirumala work almost as one destination. Below lie the railway station, bus stands and several important temples, including the Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple and, at nearby Tiruchanur, the shrine of Goddess Padmavathi. Above, along a winding ghat road or an ancient stepped footpath, is Tirumala with its temple, holy tanks, waterfalls and natural rock formations.

The temple and its facilities are run by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which organises darshan, accommodation, free meals and transport for pilgrims. With good planning and an advance darshan booking, a visit can be smooth and deeply rewarding, and the forested hills around offer quiet waterfalls and sanctuaries for those with extra time.
