Palampur Travel Guide

Tea capital of north India in the Kangra Valley

Overview

About Palampur

Palampur is a small, unhurried town in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh, spread across gentle slopes beneath the Dhauladhar range. Its tea gardens have earned it the title of the tea capital of north India, and the neat green bushes that roll down the hillsides make a striking contrast with the snowy peaks that rise sharply behind them for much of the year.

Tea was introduced to the Kangra Valley in the nineteenth century, and the estates around Palampur still produce the light, aromatic Kangra tea. The town grew around this trade, and today it is also known for its agricultural university, pine forests and the many streams that tumble down from the mountains. Compared with the busier hill stations of Himachal, Palampur feels quiet and lived-in.

Palampur makes an excellent base for exploring the wider Kangra region. The ancient Shiva temple at Baijnath, the artists' village of Andretta, the Tibetan monasteries near Bir and the paragliding hub of Billing are all within easy reach, as are Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj. It suits travellers looking for gentle walks, mountain views and a slower pace.
