Overview
About Dharamshala
Dharamshala sits on the slopes of the Kangra valley in Himachal Pradesh, with the granite wall of the Dhauladhar range rising sharply behind it. The town is spread across different levels: Lower Dharamshala holds the district offices and markets, while Upper Dharamshala, better known as McLeod Ganj, clings to a ridge higher up and is the part most visitors come to see.
Since the 1960s, McLeod Ganj has been home to the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration, earning it the nickname "Little Lhasa". Monasteries, prayer wheels, Tibetan schools and institutes sit alongside momo shops, bookshops and cafes, and the town attracts monks, students of Buddhism, volunteers and backpackers from around the world.
The wider Kangra region adds a different layer of history, with the ancient Kangra Fort, Hindu temples and the tea gardens of Palampur nearby. For walkers, Dharamshala is a superb base: the trek to Triund is one of the most popular short hikes in the Himalaya, and longer routes cross the Dhauladhar towards Chamba.
