Overview
About Khajjiar
Khajjiar is a small hamlet in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, set around a wide, saucer-shaped meadow at roughly 1,900 m. A small lake sits in the middle of the grassland, and the whole bowl is ringed by dense deodar forest, with the snow-capped peaks of the Dhauladhar range visible on clear days. The scene earned Khajjiar the popular nickname of the Mini Switzerland of India.
There is not a great deal to do here in the conventional sense, and that is part of the appeal. Visitors come to walk around the meadow, sit under the deodars, ride ponies, try simple adventure activities and enjoy the cool mountain air. The old Khajji Nag Temple, dedicated to the serpent deity, gives the place its name and has fine wooden carvings.
Most travellers visit Khajjiar as a day trip from Dalhousie, about 22 km away, or stay a night to enjoy the meadow after the crowds leave. The road between the two passes through the Kalatop Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary, and the historic town of Chamba, with its temples and museum, lies a short drive down the other side.
