Overview

About Pondicherry

Pondicherry, officially Puducherry, is a seaside town on the Coromandel Coast of south-east India, and its colonial past makes it unlike any other place in the country. For nearly three centuries it was the capital of French India, and the influence still shows in the ochre and white villas, bougainvillea-draped walls, street names in French and the tidy grid of the old town by the sea.

The town is neatly divided by an old canal. On the seaward side lies the French Quarter, or White Town, with its quiet boulevards, churches, cafes and the long Promenade along the Bay of Bengal. On the other side is the Tamil Quarter, livelier and more traditional, with its temples, markets and old Tamil houses with verandahs. Walking between the two is one of the town's great pleasures.

Pondicherry is also a spiritual centre. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram sits in the heart of the old town, and the experimental township of Auroville, with its golden Matrimandir, lies a short drive to the north. Add sandy beaches, boat trips through backwaters and a food scene that blends French and Tamil traditions, and it is easy to see why so many visitors come for a weekend and stay longer.
